Emotional intelligence is not simply being calm or agreeable. It is the ability to recognise what is happening within you and around you, then choose a response that serves the situation.
Under pressure, leaders often move faster, listen less and communicate with less context. Teams can experience that urgency as confusion or threat. A short pause can prevent a reactive message from becoming a cultural signal.
Name the emotion privately, separate facts from assumptions and decide what the team actually needs from you. Sometimes that is direction. Sometimes it is reassurance. Sometimes it is an honest acknowledgement that the answer is not yet clear.
The goal is not perfect composure. It is responsible leadership: recognising your impact and repairing quickly when your behaviour does not match your intention.
