Psychological safety is often discussed as an organisational aspiration. In practice, people experience it through small, repeated moments: whether a question is welcomed, whether a mistake becomes a lesson, and whether disagreement is met with curiosity or punishment.

Leaders set the emotional temperature of these moments. When a leader admits uncertainty, asks for perspectives before giving an answer and responds constructively to difficult news, the team learns that honesty is useful rather than dangerous.

This does not mean lowering standards or avoiding accountability. Strong cultures combine candour with care. Expectations remain clear, but people can surface risks early, challenge assumptions and ask for help before a problem becomes more expensive.

A practical starting point is to notice your response when someone brings an inconvenient truth. Pause, thank them for raising it, ask what they are seeing and agree on the next step. Culture is shaped in that response.
